The Theatro São Pedro Orchestra was created in 2010, by an initiative from the State Department of Culture, and in its young existence it has been acknowledged as one of the main opera orchestras in Brazil. In seven years, the group has played important pieces of the repertoire, such as Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro and Giuseppe Verdi’s Falstaff, and has especially stood out when exploring new paths in opera.
The Theatro São Pedro Orchestra was responsible for the national premiere of works such as Britten’s The Turn of the Screw, Paisiello’s Il barbiere di Siviglia, and Busoni’s Arlecchino. Among other operas with few executions that have been revisited by the ensemble, there are Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur, Massenet’s Don Quichotte, Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex, Prokofiev’s Betrothal in a Monastery, Montemezzi’s L’amore dei tre re, Gluck’s Iphigénie en Tauride, and Alberto Nepomuceno’s Artemis.
The list of artists who have shared the stage with the Orchestra includes renowned conductors such as Ligia Amadio, Luiz Fernando Malheiro, Ira Levin, Carlos Moreno, Roberto Tibiriçá, Silvio Viegas and Cláudio Cruz; instrumentalists of the importance of Gilberto Tinetti, Nicolau de Figueiredo, Tiago Naguel, Pacho Flores and Elisa Fukuda; and prominent singers like Denise de Freitas, Rosana Lamosa, Gabriella Pace, Gregory Reinhart, Luisa Francesconi, Vinicius Atique, Paulo Szot, Luciana Bueno, Rodolfo Giugliani, Carla Cottini, Giovanni Tristacci, among others.
In its new phase, the Theatro São Pedro Orchestra is following a new work model, with guest conductors and more variation in the repertoire, including both opera and symphonic and chamber music, in a routine that aims at deepening the different ways to make music, further increasing the excellence of its performances.
